Specifics:
London: Macmillan and Co., 1889.In one of it's earliest states The Nursery Alice . Original white cloth-backed pictorial boards, titles to front cover in red and black, toned endpapers. Mechanical enlargements of 20 of John Tenniel's illustrations, enlarged from the originals and printed in colour; text printed in brown ink. Cover illustrations by E. G. Thomson.A very delicate First edition, with the original illustration of Alice and the Cheshire Cat on page 34 with Alice's profile visible, overpriced with one shilling on the title page, the original price (of 3shillings)being overprinted Genuinely rare . Ten thousand copies of the first print run were printed by Edward Evans on toned paper. Dodgson rejected the entire edition in sheets as the pictures were "far too bright and gaudy" and instructed they should be reprinted. The casings prepared had Alice asleep beneath a tree on the front cover and a picture of the March Hare on the back. Four thousand copies of the rejected sheets were sent to the States and the book was published with a tipped-in preliminary leaf and title page dated 1890.This is dated a year earlier!3 pages of Easter greetings and one of Christmas to the rear. This copy is extremely delicate and the binding is very loose but the book is complete.Parts of the spine are tattered and the rear board retains only the top half of the March Hare, nevertheless a very rare example.
